Description of Ascophyllum

Ascophyllum nodosum, also called “goémon”, is a brown seaweed of the Fucaceae family that can grow up to 1.5 m in length. ​his alga colonises the rocks in sheltered areas along the rocky North Atlantic coast. ​It is harvested all year round from the upper part of the foreshore, close to our production site, by our seaweed harvesters.

Among edible algae, ascophyllum has the highest fibre content, most of which is alginate.
Due to their structural and physiological characteristics, brown algae accumulate minerals and vitamins. Ascophyll is one of the best dietary sources of iodine.

Organoleptic properties
– Color: light to dark brown becoming green when cooked
– Texture: crunchy with chew (flakes)​
– Taste: not very intense iodine flavor

Applications

A flavor booster, Ascophyllum can be used both raw and cooked in salads or broths. It can also be used in ‘slimming’ herbal teas and for intestinal health.
