Description
Spirulina platensis, commonly known as spirulina, is a cyanobacterium of the Cyanophyceae family. With a spiral shape, this cyanobacteria of about 0.3 mm grows naturally in warm and brackish waters of tropical and subtropical regions and has a very intense blue-green color due to the presence of phycocyanine.
Spirulina is mainly grown in ponds exposed to sunlight. Spirulina is then harvested, concentrated and dried in powder form.
Spirulina is rich in pigments such as phycocyanin, and contains a large number of minerals (including calcium, magnesium and iron) and vitamins important for human health.
